Walker: Tsai Ming-Liang Exhibition at Tabakalera
Tue,Wed,Thu,Fri,Sat,Sun
ArtFree

Tabakalera presents the audiovisual installation "Walker", a project conceived specifically for the Donostia art centre that invites visitors to experience the power of extreme slowness and contemplation. 🎨🎬

The exhibition brings together graphic work and three pieces by acclaimed Taiwanese filmmaker Tsai Ming-Liang, featuring actor Lee Kang-Sheng, as part of Tabakalera's programme exploring the intersection of contemporary art and cinema.

🎨 WALKER

📅 From 18 September to 6 December 2026

🕐 Tuesday to Sunday: 11:00–13:00 / 16:00–20:00

📍 Tabakalera, Donostia / San Sebastián

🎟️ Free admission

📖 The lost value of stillness

The project originated in 2011 when Tsai Ming-Liang collaborated with Lee Kang-Sheng on the theatrical play Only You. Fascinated by a scene where the actor walked with extreme slowness, the director decided to transfer this bodily pace to the screen, turning the body into an observer travelling the world.

This quest connects with Xuanzang, a Tang Dynasty monk. Lee Kang-Sheng portrays a contemporary version of this monk: barefoot, head shaved, in a red robe, walking through urban settings in radical introspection. The exhibition showcases three key works from the series: Walker (2012), No Form (2012), and Journey to the West (2013), filmed in Hong Kong, Taipei, and Marseille.

🎬 Film and contemporary art

Since 2012, the Walker series has grown to twelve works filmed across ten cities. The latest instalment was shot in San Sebastián in summer 2025 in collaboration with Tabakalera, presented in the Zabaltegi-Tabakalera section of the 2026 San Sebastián Film Festival.

ℹ️ Good to know: Closed on Mondays.

✨ A unique opportunity to discover the profound contemplation and poetic vision of Tsai Ming-Liang.

📖 Traces, territories, and collective horizons

Aztarnak, which means "traces" in Basque, explores clues and signals to reimagine tomorrow. Divided into three thematic blocks, the programme presents questions and alternative paths to envision multiple, expansive horizons in dialogue with technological and environmental shifts.

The first thematic block examines the idea of territory, showcasing films set in dissident or unconventional spaces to question how we inhabit what remains. The opening screening features Julen Etxebarria's El tercer paisaje alongside Lisandro Alonso's Jauja.

The project also fosters direct dialogue with attendees: one hour after each screening, an adjacent room opens for audiences to help build a collaborative image atlas using physical materials alongside the student curators.

An artistic and historical exploration reflecting on the memory and evolution of the San Telmo Museum. 🎨🏛️

As part of the seventh edition of the Museo Bikoitza program, artists Usue Arrieta and Ainara Elgoibar, members of the Tractora artists' cooperative and selected by Maddi Barber, present their joint research project.

🎨 Museo Bikoitza: "Baltzune + P-003687"

🕐 Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 19:00

📍 San Telmo Museum, Donostia / San Sebastián

🎟️ €4 / €10

📖 Artistic research into the museum collection

Both artists take the institutional history of San Telmo Museum as their central reference. Ainara Elgoibar investigates piece P-003687, the catalog code for the sculpture "Los Fundadores: Alonso de Idiáquez y Gracia de Olazábal", focusing particularly on the physical cut separating the two figures.

Meanwhile, Usue Arrieta traces the cardinal role that civil society played in establishing the museum. Using letters sent to the museum director in 1917, she explores through sound the relationship between the discipline of anthropology and artistic creation in the Basque Country.

🏛️ The Museo Bikoitza program and Tractora cooperative

Museo Bikoitza regularly invites contemporary artists to re-examine the permanent collection. In this iteration, the collective efforts of the Tractora members merge sculpture, archival manuscripts, sound exploration, and critical museum history.
