📖 Fiction and reality face to face
The story begins on the very night Clara presents her new novel. A knock at her door reveals Manuela, the evicted elderly woman who inspired the main character of her book. Bearing the marks of two hard years living on the streets, Manuela asks Clara to take her in, just as Clara's character does in the novel.
Urged by her publisher, Clara reluctantly agrees to shelter the woman for a while. Marketed as autofiction with an ambitious print run, the book carries substantial financial stakes and Clara's own literary reputation. If readers ever discover that the author behaves in real life quite differently from her fictional persona, everything could unravel.
